Tuca's vocabulary (September 2006)
- Hi sweetie! or Hi guys! Probably her favorite all-around phrases. When we come back after being gone for a while, she usually says this several times as we are letting her out of her cage.
- Bye bye! See you later! These were Tuca's first words, and she still says this to us when we leave. She uses these two phrases separately as well as together.
- Did you miss me? She says this when we come home after being gone for a while.
- Pretty! She says this sometimes when she displays her wings for someone she likes.
- Ready ready ready! and Lunch is ready! and It's ready! (3 separate phrases) She'll often say one of these when the kitchen timer beeps; she'll also say this when I'm preparing a meal and she wishes I would hurry up.
- Are you okay? Sort of an all-purpose phrase for Tuca.
- Inker-dink (and many variations, such as Hi inker-dink, Ink-ker-dink-ker-dink etc.) She says this when she is in one room and we are in the other, and she wants to be picked up to be with us. We have no idea how this started, but it is pretty consistent. Weird!
- I'm right here! She says this when I am out of the room and she wants me to come back in.
- Mom's right here! She says this when I return to the room after being gone for a while, and also after she's been upset and I am comforting her (guess how she learned that one).
- Did you see your wing? We say "Can I see your wing?" to her, and she used to repeat that; now, she's got her own variation on it.
- I'll be back soon! and I'll be right back! A favorite phrase when we are leaving the room.
- I love you. One of my favorite phrases to hear.
- Hi Ida! Ida was one of our other birds, a red-eared waxbill finch. Ida has been gone for a number of years, but Tuca still says hello to her.
- Hi Bruce! and Hi Tweesa! She can't quite say my name (Teresa) correctly, but it is very cute the way that she does say it!
- Going upstairs-stairs! She says this when she has been in the basement with me and we are going back up the stairs. She always doubles the word "stairs".
- Nite-nite. Tuca will say this when she is ready to go to bed, asking to be put in her cage; she also says this after we put her in her cage for the night.
- Peeky-boo! After her shower, Tuca used to roll herself up in a small towel, then stick her head out and say this. We haven't heard it for a while, but she still rolls herself up in the towel.
- I see you! She used to combine this with Peeky-boo, but hasn't said this for a while now.
